What are the best Strategies for transitioning from Employee to Entrepreneur?
I was recently asked to contribute to an online discussion on this topic and wanted to share my take on it as it provides an excellent topic for reflection for those who are already entrepreneurs or those who would like to step into the space.
Entrepreneurship isn't something that can be manufactured; it's a calling that resides deep within. I have had the privilege of meeting many individuals who, once employees, discovered they did not ‘fit’ into traditional roles and organisational structures. They exhibited entrepreneurial characteristics, starting with immense excitement and quickly transitioning into innovative thinkers with ideas to enhance workplaces, reshape cultures, or improve products and services. At this point, they often realise their distinctiveness, driven by an extra dose of passion and a willingness to embrace risks, unlike their peers with lower risk appetites and preferences to follow established processes.
Another common indicator was their discomfort with restrictive workplace structures. Sadly, some managers and leaders perceived these entrepreneurial spirits as threats. When such scenarios repeated across various workplaces and circumstances, these driven and diverse individuals began to dream of environments where they could lead and innovate freely.
Becoming an entrepreneur starts with a deep understanding of your strengths and weaknesses. It's about identifying areas that need development and either honing those skills or collaborating with others who complement your abilities. However, one of the most formidable challenges for entrepreneurs is learning to share their vision and entrust others to champion their ideas and projects.
